Coach Spotlight - Josh Wentz

Head Esports Coach Josh Wentz (he/him) of Dawson Community College (DCC) describes his role in one word: “Epic.” Wentz launched the program in 2020 and has helped grow the team ever since. In fact, his early involvement in esports in the early 2000s instilled in him such positive experiences that he wanted to share those same feelings with others.

Wentz got involved in esports as a competitor when online first-person shooters were just gaining popularity and online competitive gaming was beginning to attract attention. At the time, it wasn’t yet known as "esports"—players were forming teams and creating their own leagues. Having been able to watch, enjoy, and be involved in the industry for so long, Wentz feels a strong commitment to its success. He finds collegiate esports extra special, as he believes he is contributing to the industry's growth in a meaningful way.

The DCC program had rosters competing across all tiers of the NJCAAE, from Tier 1 to Tier 3. It was a mixed season, with some teams going undefeated in the regular season, while others secured only a few wins. Each season brings its own set of challenges, and every roster has a unique experience.

“I think the NJCAAE is valuable in expanding opportunity and visibility for esports at the two-year collegiate level. It creates a pathway for people to compete in organized esports,” said Wentz. “Students feel a part of a team and a larger movement, creating a sense of belonging and school pride.”

Looking ahead, Wentz’s goals for next year include continuing to recruit and grow the program, expanding its outreach, and laying the foundation for long-term success. In his free time, when he's not spending time with his family or taking a family road trip, Wentz often competes in games himself, exploring new releases or replaying classic favorites. He is an active competitor in Magic: The Gathering, having qualified for Regional Championships and frequently traveling to compete. He is already qualified for the upcoming event at SCG Con Houston in October.
