In the spring semester of 2024, the NJCAAE recognized 151 All-Academic students from 20 different schools. To qualify as an All-Academic Student, students must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA during the Spring 2024 semester and meet all other NJCAAE eligibility and conduct requirements.
At the NJCAAE, we celebrate these outstanding students. We understand the challenge of balancing academics, extracurricular activities, and work, especially as summer approaches or for those who are seniors. We applaud those who achieved this honor and anticipate even more All-Academic students for the upcoming fall semester.
Marshalltown Community College (MCC) led with 20 All-Academic students for the spring semester. Located in Marshalltown, Iowa, MCC has steadily grown its esports program since launching it in 2022. The college competes in the NJCAAE in titles such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8 DX, Overwatch 2, and Rainbow Six Siege.
In a 2023 interview, esports coach Andrew Goforth discussed how esports has benefited his players academically.
“As a full-time professor, as well as a coach, I can safely say that the level of student growth I see from my esports team is unparalleled. I have several students I could mention. Amber, our Mario Kart player, was a walk-on with a C-average. She went from that, to in one semester, winning a championship and finishing with a 4.0,” Goforth said (2023).
We are excited to announce that Amber earned All-Academic status this past semester at the NJCAAE. Clearly, MCC is successfully supporting its students.
The MCC esports team also offers scholarships for athletes, analysts, team managers, and more. Additionally, MCC now has two esports degrees available, which the college has been developing since 2023. These include an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Esports Program Management and an Esports Program Management Diploma.
As the NJCAAE continues to recognize the achievements of our members, institutions like MCC set a strong example of how dedicated support and innovative programs can lead to academic success. With an expanding esports program and a commitment to student growth, MCC prepares its students for a successful future. We look forward to seeing more accomplishments from All-Academic students in the seasons to come.
