Issac O’Neal III, a 20-year-old student from Macon, Georgia, is building his future in collegiate esports while pursuing a career in information technology. Currently in his third year at Gordon State College, O’Neal is working toward earning his associate degree in IT, with plans to continue his education and complete a bachelor’s degree.
Gordon State College (GSC) provides an environment O’Neal describes as peaceful and welcoming. The campus features scenic views and a close-knit community that allows students to focus on their goals while enjoying their surroundings.
O’Neal studies computer science, where he learns coding and computer programming fundamentals. His long-term plans extend beyond esports. After completing his current program, he hopes to secure an internship with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. before returning to school to further his education.
On the GSC esports team, O’Neal plays a variety of titles, including Titanfall 2, Madden 26, and Star Wars Battlefront II, along with story-driven games. He primarily competes in online franchise modes, where strategic decision-making plays a major role in success.
O’Neal got into esports unexpectedly. He joined the GSC program on a whim. During his first year, he helped lead the team to its first national playoff appearance, which he says is his biggest accomplishment to date.
Growth as a competitor came through mental discipline as much as practice. O’Neal learned how to pace himself, remain focused, and manage pressure during competition. He views gaming as a mental battle and applies that same approach to everyday life. Overcoming procrastination and staying motivated, he said, creates the same sense of victory as winning a match.
Being part of a collegiate esports team has been a rewarding experience for O’Neal. The program introduced him to a diverse and welcoming group of teammates, while support from coaches and peers stood out during the national playoffs.
Competing in the NJCAAE added motivation and visibility. O’Neal said seeing his gameplay clips shared on the NJCAAE main page became one of his most memorable moments and strengthened his drive to compete for his school. He also praised the NJCAAE for its commitment to supporting esports at the collegiate level.
Here at the NJCAAE, Black History Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the impact of Black voices across collegiate esports. When asked what Black History Month means to him, O’Neal shared that it represents a celebration of culture, history, and the perseverance that made today’s opportunities possible.
Whether in the classroom or in competition, Issac O’Neal III continues to move forward with focus and determination, building toward his goals one achievement at a time.
