Michael Knickerbocker, 23, is a student at Wichita State University Campus of Applied Sciences and Technology (WSU Tech). Currently, he is balancing his passion for collegiate esports with his pursuit of a career in aviation. Originally from Kansas City, Kansas, Knickerbocker joined the Air Force in 2022 as an inflight refueling operator before moving to Wichita in early 2024.

Knickerbocker is in his second of four semesters in the professional pilot program at WSU Tech. This semester, he is working toward his instrument rating while continuing to develop his skills in the aircraft.

After graduating, Knickerbocker plans to fly private jets for a local company in Wichita. Looking five years ahead, he hopes to either fly private jets or teach others how to fly and help them reach their goals in the aviation industry.

Knickerbocker’s interest in esports began in high school, when he started playing Rocket League with friends. He enjoyed the competition and eventually took his passion to the collegiate level, originally playing Rocket League for Central Methodist University.

One of Knickerbocker’s biggest accomplishments came in 2019, when he won all 52 weekend tournaments at a computer cafe in Kansas City, setting a local record. He also placed third at the annual NECC nationals while competing for Central Methodist University.

To continue improving in Rocket League, Knickerbocker splits his practice time between ranked 2v2 or 3v3 matches and free play. He uses free play to experiment with new techniques and work on putting those skills into practice.

Being part of a collegiate esports team at WSU Tech has been a positive experience for Knickerbocker. He enjoys the competition and the pressure that comes with wanting to win. He also values the connections he has made with teammates and other players who share similar interests and hobbies.

Knickerbocker said one of his most memorable NJCAAE experiences came while competing in Rocket League 2v2. Playing alongside his teammate allowed the two to grow closer as friends. Their connection has continued beyond esports, and they remain close friends both in and outside of the game.

“I really appreciate the opportunity that NJCAAE gives students to compete with others and experience esports with all of the great experiences it brings,” said Knickerbocker.

His advice to other students interested in esports is to find ways to use their passion to support their education.

“An old pilot I flew with always said before we flew "let's go chase perfection" knowing no one is perfect but making your best effort to be the best version of yourself.”

Outside of esports and aviation, Knickerbocker builds his own amateur rockets. His current goal is to reach an altitude of 20,000 feet.

Whether he is training in the aircraft, competing in Rocket League or building rockets, Knickerbocker continues to pursue interests that combine competition, skill development and his long-term goals in aviation.
