Player Spotlight - Destiny Brown
Destiny Brown, 18, is a cyber security student at the University of South Carolina (USC) Sumter. She also plays Overwatch for the USC Fireants Esports team.
How did you get involved in esports?
“I got involved in esports by hearing about it from classmates and from there I reached out to the coach and asked if I could join. He then invited me to the practices to learn and see how things were done. Once the next semester started, I then became part of the team,” said Brown, “It has been amazing, and I honestly feel like being a part of the team is one of the best things that happened to me since I started college.”
Brown thrives from learning from others and applying the advice given to her not only in esports but in everyday life as well. She does not let her pride get in the way and said that she really improves by listening to others and keeping their tips in mind.
Head Esports Coach, Kris Weissmann, had only good things to say about Brown.
“Destiny is a model esports player for our program. She shows up on time and is always ready to go! She works hard, plays outside of practice, and excels in the classroom. The growth she has shown in just a short time in our program mirrors a great reflection of her character and commitment,” said Weissmann.
While there are arguably many stereotypes that come with gamers, Brown expressed that esports is not filled with only male players, there are many female gamers too, just like herself.
Who are you outside of esports?
“I love music and I have been playing the drums since I was in elementary school. Since college, I haven’t really been playing as much as I used to, but I try to play when I can,” said Brown, “In 5 years from now, I hope to have finished college and have a job in the field of my degree and working towards another degree.”
